Joel Makin is a Licensed Professional Counselor, Clinical Addictions Counselor, and the founder of Dynamic Growth Counseling. Since 2011, he has walked with individuals through seasons of anxiety, depression, addiction, relational disconnection, and spiritual confusion. His work is grounded in the belief that real healing occurs when people are invited into both emotional truth and spiritual clarity, an integration he has spent over a decade cultivating.
Joel’s therapeutic framework blends Christian theology, clinical depth, and character-based development. As a former adjunct professor at the Townsend Institute at Concordia University – Irvine, CA and Huntington University, he has taught graduate-level courses on clinical skills, diagnosis, child development, group process, and advanced counseling techniques. His approach is informed by Psychodynamic Psychotherapy, Gestalt therapy and rooted in the integration of psychology and theology championed by S. Bruce Narramore, who emphasized that relational connection is central to all true healing. Joel believes that people change when they experience safety, not shame; presence, not pressure.
Clients who work with Joel often come feeling stuck in cycles they can’t explain: high-functioning but hollow, spiritually committed but emotionally avoidant, relationally generous but internally exhausted. Joel gently uncovers the unmet developmental needs at the root of these patterns, needs for healthy bonding, safe separation, self-integration, and mature responsibility. In the therapy room, he creates a space where clients can grieve what they never received, untangle what has distorted their identity, and begin rebuilding from a place of restored connection to God, others, and self.
Joel’s work resonates with the purpose-driven model articulated by Rick Warren, that people are created by God for God, and that life only finds meaning when we align with that design. Whether working with leaders facing burnout, professionals in quiet crisis, or Christians wrestling with addiction or shame, Joel calls clients toward a vision that is both redemptive and practical: to live a life of character, clarity, and contribution.
With a history of building and directing therapy programs across hospital, outpatient, and academic settings, Joel brings both clinical sophistication and relational depth to his work. His career has included leadership at Parkview Behavioral Health Institute, the Bowen Center, and Concordia University’s Graduate Counseling Program. He has developed high-retention educational models, led therapist teams, presented at national conferences, and built programs that integrate character, neuroscience, and faith-based practice.
Through Dynamic Growth Counseling, Joel offers online counseling for adults seeking more than symptom relief, individuals ready to do the deeper work of integration, healing, and purpose. He specializes in helping Christian professionals, ministry leaders, and high-capacity individuals restore emotional health without losing their spiritual or vocational identity.
