Joseph Velazquez

Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist | MA, LMFT

What is the goal of your marriage or relationship? Relationships are vital to becoming a whole person. At times, connecting with your spouse may feel magical, but every relationship goes through tough seasons. I understand how overwhelming it can feel when distance and resentment is the only thing growing between you. At times, it may feel like the hurt you are experiencing is not worth the effort and you wonder “Is this really God’s best for me?” Maybe your relationship is still strong but can stand a bit of tweaking to recapture the zest it once had. Whatever the case, there is always hope!

The sign of a healthy relationship is not the absence of problems, but how well you move towards one another in those moments. The couples I work with learn effective communication patterns leading to more attuned emotional responses. I offer a space grounded in biblical principles to help you clarify your goals and deepen your interpersonal skills.

Sometimes we need help refining our relationship tools in order to learn and grow. Inevitably, what comes up in my sessions is that each person wants to be seen, heard, valued and pursued. It’s easier than you think to enhance your ability to move towards your partner during hard moments. I can help you learn to reconnect in healthy ways.

I have completed Gottman Method Couples Therapy Training, Levels 1, 2, & 3. I have also completed Leadership Training for the Gottman best selling book: The Seven Principles for Making Marriage Work. Additionally, I have completed Gottman coursework for Treating Affairs and Trauma. Although Gottman interventions are primarily designed for couples, they also come in handy when working with individuals who desire growth in their personal development, managing conflict in relationships and living more authentic, connected lives.

Although I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT), I also enjoy working with individual men, women and young adults to help build a clearer vision of individual purpose, stronger communities and families. I have worked one-on-one with scores of clients. I have helped many people reinvest in their natural abilities and spiritual health to deepen their relationship with God, themselves and the important people in their lives.

I am licensed in both Idaho and Washington. I offer Telehealth to WA residents and both in-person/Telehealth to ID residents (in the Sandpoint area). For Idaho clients I am in-network with Aetna, Blue Cross Blue Shield, and Regence (and in process for several others). For clients residing in WA I am cash-pay. However, I can provide a superbill that may help with reimbursement. Please reach out with any questions. I am happy to work with you to keep therapy affordable.

I believe you are the expert in your own life. I come alongside you in your spiritual walk to help you gain clarity and experience God’s transformative love in new ways. Feeling empowered to take consistent, little steps creates new life-habits that have a big impact over time. In that sense, I am client centered and tailor my approach to your unique narrative and circumstances. My number one goal is building a rapport with you.

Reaching out for help is the first step in taking care of yourself. You are here because you are tired of things feeling out of whack in your life and relationships. You feel like it is time to take your life back and be refreshed in mind, body, soul and spirit. I can help. You got this!
