I’m Gary DeVine, a Licensed Professional Counselor in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. I have a graduate degree in mental health counseling from Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary and a bachelor’s in biblical and theological studies from Gordon College.
I’m a Board-Certified Professional Christian Counselor and a Certified Clinical Trauma Professional.
I use best-practices to help men and women get well, largely from an Acceptance and Commitment approach.
However, for my Christian clients, I’m also a faith-based counselor. I do see non-Christian clients for whom I use a strictly Cognitive Behavioral approach, but for my Christian clients, whatever your denomination, you should know that treatment is tailored to you, which is what I would want from any therapist.
By faith-based I don’t simply mean that I’m a Christian and therefore your faith won’t be ridiculed, although that is certainly an important benefit of seeing a Christian therapist. I don’t simply mean that I will utilize prayer and the Bible in treatment, though I will according to your comfort level. I mean that I do what I do by faith and encourage my clients to do the same.
By this I mean that although I am educated in psychology and theology and Bible, although I am trained and skilled at counseling, although I have 2 decades of experience, I am not putting my faith in any of this. God certainly uses these gifts to enable me to help others, but my faith is in Him alone. Faith makes all the difference in the world. I teach my clients to live by faith and to get well by faith. The Bible teaches us that this is how we can do anything; this is our greatest asset.
